So I flew down to Singapore to catch the Asian tour of the Premier League, which comes to the region every two years and gives us bankers a rare chance to feel envious about how much somebody is paid for seemingly not doing much.
As I was an especially invited VIP, nothing was too much for our hosts, which meant I had some of the best seats in the house with all the free flowing champagne and canapés I could get down me while watching the boys from Arsenal, Everton and Stoke.
Speaking of guests of honour, football legend Ian Wright swung by and graced us with his presence. I have to admit I was slightly star-struck, especially when he gave me some autographed souvenirs (none of that selfie nonsense for me).
This star treatment I got was courtesy of a certain British bank whose sponsorship of the game is sadly coming to an end. Unfortunately that seems to be par for the course for our once world-beating British financial institutions.
It’s probably a sign that I should start cozying up to the American banks if I want to keep snagging invitations to these coveted events. That said, I’m not much of a fan of American football — poor man’s rugby if you ask me.
But there was plenty to celebrate this time around, as before heading down to Asia’s other world city I couldn’t resist the temptation to make things a little more exciting for myself. My chums and I made a few bets, and needless to say, like my team of choice the Gunners, I emerged victorious.
