China Resources Enterprise is considered to possess the best corporate governance practices in Asia, according to ASIAMONEY’s latest Corporate Governance Poll.
The number one spot marks an impressive promotion for the Hong Kong-headquartered consumer goods producer, which in 2011 was voted the fifth-best overall company for corporate governance. In second place Taiwanese financial giant Chinatrust Financial continues to hold steady, retaining its spot for the second year running.
A total of 137 senior executives and research analysts from 92 firms voted in this year’s poll, in which voters rank companies in each major Asian market for their disclosure and transparency, shareholders’ rights and equitable treatment in investor relations.
Hong Kong real estate developer Sun Hung Kai Properties also continues to impress voters, preserving its third-place ranking for the second year. This is a notable vote of confidence from executives and analysts, given that the company’s co-chairmen Thomas Kwok Ping-kwong and Raymond Kwok Ping-luen were formally charged with offences relating to bribery and misconduct by Hong Kong’s Independent Commission Against Corruption on July 13. The case is set to be held on January 25.
Taiwan's semiconductor giant TSMC takes fourth spot in this year's poll, while the largest faller among the top ranks is Bangalore-based IT services firm Infosys. The company was voted first last year, but it essentially swaps places with China Resources Enterprises to be voted fifth-best for corporate governance in 2012.
