The loan market brushed the dust off its black tie and gathered at the Guildhall in the City of London to hear the winners of the GlobalCapital loan awards.
But ICBC’s Benny Zachariah gets a special mention for turning up in a grey suit, not black tie.
Zachariah has been told that he can get away with it once, but if he turns up to the awards in the wrong uniform next year, he won’t get in.
SocGen’s Richard Hill wreaked havoc when he told the Ranger to say something witty in her speech, but two glasses of champagne later, the Ranger struggled to muster anything witty to say,
Commerzbank’s Reinhard Haas made his debut as head of loans for his bank and said he will have big boots to fill replacing Roland Boehm.
SEB’s Michael Dicks should receive another award for the best acceptance speech of the evening. When collecting the award for best arranger of Nordic loans for SEB, Dicks thanked “my ferret, my Labrador, my lover, my mother”.
Charles Corbett politely introduced the Ranger to his loans team and then said: “Now you can never talk to these people again,” for fear that the Ranger would start quizzing his staff.
The evening’s entertainment was provided by world famous explorer Ranulph Fiennes, a man so hardy that he sawed off his own frostbitten fingers when no doctor would operate on him.
Fiennes is perhaps most famous for being the first person to cross Antartica on foot but he said he struggled to navigate his way to the venue for the awards because he is so unaccustomed to the city.
