GC Blog: Virgin? What virgin?

In the course of our crusading financial journalising, Blog receives our fair share of odd messages from sources. One this week beat them all, however. We opened an email one morning which read simply: “Virgin, I am free.”

Now, beyond the initial confusion and shock (our first reaction *may* have been yelling “WHAT? I’ve had sex!”) caused by receiving such a blunt missive first thing in the morning from a senior banker, Blog must admit to having felt a little chuffed at the apparently sensual invitation.

It took a few moments to figure out the source was in fact declaring themselves available to discuss Virgin Money’s IPO. Disappointing, but much more professional, of course. We look forward to the next misunderstanding.

Moving on to more savoury — or sweet*— matters Blog was delighted to hear that BNP Paribas has been empowering homeless women through a method particularly close to our heart: eating lots of cake.

The French bank has been supporting The Marylebone Project’s Munch, which is aimed at empowering homeless women towards independent living by teaching them to bake and sell cakes. BNP P are doing this by, you guessed it, buying and consuming vast quantities of cake.

The lucky workers this week gobbled down chocolate brownies, lemon yoghurt cake, gluten free coconut squares and a pear and ginger cake.

We expect we’ll be casually passing by the BNP Paribas offices around lunch time more often in future, which is going to be quite hard to do as the bank’s Marylebone headquarters are miles away from London’s other financial hubs.

What’s that we hear? There’s a short cut from the City to Canary Wharf via Marylebone despite Marylebone being on the other side of London? That makes perfect sense — it must be something to do with traffic flow. Cake nirvana, here we come.
