William Archer, chief underwriting officer for North America at Goldman Sachs, has left the firm to join Barclays Capital. As first reported on Credit Investment News' Web site last week, Bruce Mendelsohn was named on Thursday as Archer's replacement. Mendelsohn, who was head of the bank debt portfolio group, will retain that role as well as taking on Archer's role as chief underwriting officer. Archer's last day was Wednesday and it is believed Mendelsohn will assume the new role immediately. A Goldman Sachs spokesman declined comment.
It is not immediately clear what Archer's new role will be at Barclays, though he is thought to hold a similar position as he did at Goldman. He could not be reached for comment. A Barclays Capital spokeswoman could not immediately comment.
Archer joined Goldman in 2002. Before that he worked at Deutsche Bank as co-global head of non-investment grade debt underwriting. In 1981 Archer joined Bankers Trust, serving in a number of positions, including deputy chief credit officer and chief credit officer at BT after it was acquired by Deutsche Bank. He started his career in 1976 in corporate finance at National Westminster Bank.
